[ARCHIVED] POLICE SERGEANT HONORED WITH LIFESAVING AWARD

A Johnston Police Sergeant was honored with a lifesaving award for an incident that occurred on September 16, 2020. Sgt. McClain was dispatched to assist medics on an adult male choking who was unconscious and not breathing. He arrived on the scene within minutes, confirmed the subject was in cardiac arrest, and immediately began high-quality CPR for approximately five minutes. Once the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department (JGMFD) arrived, they took over patient care.  After approximately 17 minutes without a pulse, the individual’s heartbeat was restored and he began to breathe on his own.

Upon later review, it was determined that the patient had choked on a piece of food that obstructed his airway, which lead to cardiac arrest. Without Sgt. McClain’s fast response and high-quality CPR in conjunction with advanced life support provided by members of the JGMFD, the individual, would not have survived. The patient has made a full recovery.

The individual and his family are eternally grateful for the quick response from the first responders. The first responders used the training they receive regularly and saved the individual's life.

Congratulations to Sgt. McClain and thank you for your dedicated service to the Johnston community.
