The State Data Center at the State Library of Iowa released estimates for populations of Iowa cities in 2019 from the U.S. Census Bureau. These estimates will be the last look at Iowa’s population totals before the release of the 2020 census. Based upon the estimates of cities larger than 20,000, Johnston is the third fastest growing City.
The fastest-growing cities in Iowa with a population greater than 20,000 since 2010 include:
- Waukee – 24,089 population, 74.4% growth.
- Ankeny – 67,355 population, 47.7% growth.
- Johnston – 22,582 population, 30.7% growth.
- West Des Moines – 67,899 population, 19.7% growth.
“Johnston is a thriving community with many great amenities for our residents to enjoy,” said Mayor Paula Dierenfeld. “Building permits over the last few years have been steady, and Johnston continues to be one of the fastest-growing communities in the state. We are excited about the new Johnston Town Center and the opportunities it will offer residents. The 2020 Census is underway, and Johnston’s response rate is currently 73.2 percent. I want to encourage every Johnston resident to respond as it will help determine the amount of state and federal funding our community will receive in the next decade.”
