On Monday, May 25, Johnston experienced an EF-1 tornado, which caused damage to specific areas of our community. Although the storm was not widespread throughout our community, it did cause damage to portions in the path of the storm.
To assist residents most impacted, the city will provide a curbside collection of trees and branches damaged by the storm.
The residential properties included in the curbside collection include:
- East of Merle Hay Road - from Merle Hay Road on the west to NW Beaver Drive on the east, and from NW 57th Avenue on the south to NW 70th Avenue on the north.
- Westside of Merle Hay Road - from Merle Hay Road on the east to Pioneer Parkway on the west, and from Pioneer Parkway on the south to NW 62nd Avenue on the north.
The curbside collection of storm-related trees and branches will take place on Tuesday, June 2. All material must be placed on the curb by 6:00 a.m. and meet the following guidelines:
- Branches and trees cannot exceed 18-inches in diameter or four feet in length.
- As always, Johnston residents may dispose of yard waste through the Metro Waste Authority Compost It! Program. Compost It! is collected on the regular garbage day by placing the material in a yard waste bag or bundling the materials in bundles not exceeding 18-inches in diameter, or four feet in length, and placing a yard waste sticker on the bundle.
The city also has a free yard waste drop-off event on June 4 – 6 where Johnston residents can drop off branches and limbs at the Public Works Facility, located at 6400 NW Beaver Drive, at no cost on June 4 through 6. Please bring your ID for proof of residency. Branches cannot be larger than 18 inches in diameter. Tree debris will be turned into mulch.

- Thursday, June 4 - 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
- Friday, June 5 - 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Saturday, June 6 - 8 a.m. to noon
