This week is National Public Works Week, May 17-23, 2020! Since 1960, the American Public Works Association has sponsored National Public Works Week to energize and educate the public on the importance of public works within communities across North America. The individuals within this department plan, build, manage and operate at the heart of Johnston to improve everyday quality of life for the residents they serve.

“Our public works employees are continually working to make improvements within the community they serve,” said Public Works Director Matt Greiner. “Together, we have a combined 247 years of service among the employees. They are all proud of the work they get to do every day. It’s gratifying to see the community changes as they travel the roads where the improvements were made. Each of the employee’s attention to detail and the quality of work they provide certainly makes Johnston a great community to live in.”

The Johnston Public Works Department has 24 employees.

  • 7 – Streets
  • 7 – Water/wastewater
  • 3 – Traffic/Facilities
  • 2 – Construction/Stormwater Inspectors
  • 1 – Fleet Services
  • 1 – Administrative Assistant
  • 1 – Water Analyst
  • 1 – Superintendent
  • 1 – Director

The 2020 Public Works Week theme is “The Rhythm of Public Works,” which aims to challenge citizens to think about their communities as a symphony of essential services, working in concert to create a great place to live.

As Johnston continues to grow, so do the needs within our community. Maintaining the quality of our City’s infrastructure, which includes water main and streets, is essential. Our staff carefully plans out the Capital Improvements needed to ensure the residents are receiving the quality of life within our community. As new roads and infrastructure are put in place, it is crucial these are maintained, and that is done in our Capital Improvement Plan.

The public works staff takes their jobs seriously, and are a few statistics of their efforts.

  • Snowplow trucks were sent out 35 times this winter 19′-20′
  • 424 various water quality tests (236 hours)
  • 558 hours installing, repairing, and replacing water meters
  • Responded to 1,474 Iowa One Call utility requests
  • The following is from January through April 2020
    • 596 hours full-depth concrete patching
    • 511 hours joint sealing roadways
    • 568 hours filling potholes
    • 125 hours street sweeping
    • 350 hours maintaining and installing signs

“While the COVID-19 pandemic has changed our direct contact with residents, we are still here to provide service through email or by phone,” Matt Greiner said.
