Pruning trees_250x214

Late fall and winter is the best time to trim most trees, and the only time you should prune oaks and elms. Trimming your tree while it is dormant will minimize the chances of diseases and insects from impacting your tree. Trees should be cut to maximize symmetry, but you should also know if there are any City Ordinances to consider. Trees that fall within the right-of-way (that area between the street and sidewalk) must be trimmed so that the limbs or branches are at least 14 feet over the road and 8 feet over the sidewalk. It is the resident’s responsibility to keep these trees trimmed per the ordinance. Below is a diagram that shows the proper way to trim or prune a tree. If you have any questions about trimming your tree, you can reach the Parks and Recreation Department at 515-727-8091.
