Ride your bike past city hall, stop for a bite to eat, and enjoy a concert in the park from a rooftop patio—right here in Johnston. These amenities and more are coming to you soon in the form of a new city center.

Located on the east side of Merle Hay Road between NW 62nd Avenue and NW 63rd Place, Johnston Town Center will serve as a gathering place, anchoring original parts of the city with its rapid westward and northward expansion. “We wanted a place for our residents to connect,” Johnston Mayor Paula Dierenfeld said. “The Johnston Town Center will also create a physical identifier for our city, for both programmed events and casual visits.”

The Town Center will include new restaurants, businesses and office space, accented by four-seasons amenities, like an ice rink in the winter that morphs into a splash pad in the warmer months. The spacious park area at the heart of the Town Center will host the existing farmer’s market, various concerts, festivals, movies in the park, car shows, and curling and ice-skating. It will also include a bicycle trailhead serving as a connection point between bike trails.

With plans to break ground in October 2019, the project (including city hall construction) will begin in earnest in spring 2020. Hansen Real Estate and its affiliate, The Hansen Company, were selected by the City of Johnston through a competitive process to help finalize and carry out the vision. Design partners OPN and Confluence along with various engineering firms were enlisted to create a mixed-use development anchored by Johnston’s new city hall.

“We’re going for year-round activation and energy at the Town Center,” Hansen Real Estate President Troy Hansen said. “We’re hopeful the community will embrace our concept.”

Hansen Company and Hansen Real Estate’s offices are located in Johnston and its owners are longtime Johnston residents. They anticipate their work on the Town Center will be a signature development for their community.
