Each year, the City of Johnston’s Building Department proudly celebrates Building Safety Month in May to remind residents of the critical role our building and public safety members have to ensure the safety of businesses and residents. The individuals in these departments spend countless hours ensuring the public has safe, efficient, and livable buildings.
“The City of Johnston is committed to recognizing that our growth and strength depends on the safety and economic a value of the homes, buildings and infrastructure that serve our citizens, both in everyday life and in times of natural disaster,” said David Wilwerding Community Development Director. “Building Safety Month encourages appropriate steps everyone can take to ensure that the places where we live, learn, work, worship and play are safe.”
During the City Council meeting on Monday, May 6, 2019, the proclamation for Building Safety Month was approved. Building Safety Month encourages all Americans to raise awareness of the importance of building safety and resilient construction, fire prevention, disaster mitigation, and new technologies in the construction industry.
Building Safety Month is an opportunity to recognize the valuable team members who ensure all homes and buildings are safe within Johnston. These team members include Doug Sandvig, Building Official; John Taylor, Building Inspector II; Eric Rehm, Building Inspector II; Rebekah Davis, Administrative Assistant all members of the Johnston Building Department and Craig Ver Huel, Fire Marshall with the Johnston Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department.
The Building Department is located in City Hall at 6221 Merle Hay Road and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information about the services offered by the Building Department, click here.
