The City of Johnston is excited to announce and invite the public to attend the Grand Opening for the new one-of-a-kind playground at Terra Park, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway on Monday, May 7 at 5:00 p.m.

“Terra Park is a gem within our community where families can enjoy nature as well as other amenities,” said Mayor Paula Dierenfeld. “Having this playground as an added feature will allow kids and families to connect with natural areas surrounding the playground, while enjoying the peacefulness of Terra. Being able to watch the prairie grow up around the playground and the kids running through the play sites is something I can’t wait to see with this new park addition.”

The playground includes equipment for both young and older children, with swings, and stations that encourages active movement. Each of the five pods have both play and education involved, but require movement to get to each of the areas.

“I am really excited about the opening of this new and unique playground because it is the final phase in making Terra Park complete,” said John Schmitz Parks & Recreation Director. “Terra Park is a project I have seen come to life over the last five years. The opportunity this park and playground structure add to the community, is endless. It is a place for kids and families to play, and an area where people of all ages can enjoy nature and the beautiful trails surrounding the 200-acre park.”

The playground was made possible by the Iowa Economic Development Authority Community Action Tourism Grant and Polk County Community Grant.  The playground was constructed by Joiner Construction Company.
