Spring cleanup will happen during the month of April in Johnston and the city has some helpful tips to ensure your spring cleaning is a successful one.
Curbside cleanup
On April 16 and 17, (depending upon which day is your designated trash collection day) place your items on the curb by 6 a.m. Depending on the volume of the collection, it could last through April 18.
Items you can place on the curb include:
- Box springs

- Mattresses
- Chairs
- Televisions
- Doors
- Old dishes
- Tables
- Couches
- Computer monitors
Smaller items must be placed in bags or boxes. If you live in an apartment, condo or town home with private trash collection, you may not be a part of the Spring Cleanup Event. Please contact your association or management to find out.
Items that will not be picked up include:
- Appliances
- Yard waste
- Electronic waste
- Windows (Larger than 2' x 4')
- Hazardous waste
- Broken glass
- Concrete
- Landscape material
- Fences
- Tires
- Drywall
Items from small home improvement projects, like a few doors or windows, will be allowed. Windows larger than 2' x 4' will not be picked up. Items from large construction or landscape projects including railroad ties will also not be picked up.

Getting Rid of Hazardous Waste
To get rid of hazardous waste, Johnston residents have three options. First, we’ve teamed up with Metro Waste Authority for house-side pickup of these items. Using this program ensures these items are disposed of in an environmentally-friendly manner. Please visit cityofjohnston.com/hazardouswaste or Johnston City Hall, located at 6221 Merle Hay Road, to learn more about starting this pickup service at your house.
Second, residents may visit the new northwest household hazardous waste drop-off site in Grimes. Located at 4105 SE Beisser Drive, residents may take hazardous waste to this location on the second Saturday of every month between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon. This location accepts latex paint, and charges $1 per gallon or $5 per five gallon bucket of paint.
Finally, residents may also visit the metro hazardous waste facility located at 1105 Prairie Drive SW in Bondurant during normal business hours. They’re open Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Please call 515-967-5512 for more information on what is accepted.
Hazardous waste materials such as batteries, solvents, paints, railroad ties, concrete, bricks, fertilizer, building materials and appliances are not accepted in the April 16 and 17 Spring Cleanup Event.
