On Thursday, December 7, Lt. Tompkins with the Johnston Police Department received the Commander's Award for Public Service for outstanding service to the Iowa National Guard by helping develop an international youth camp exchange with Kosovo. Tompkins worked tirelessly to secure funding from a diverse base of community stakeholders to send four Johnston High School students to Kosovo for the Toka Summer Camp. His willingness to support the Iowa National Guard's efforts to help Kosovo develop and strengthen its civic society demonstrates outstanding citizenship and a commitment to excellence, reflecting great honor upon himself, the Johnston Police Department, the City of Johnston, the State of Iowa and the United States of America.
