The Johnston Police Department is proud to commend Officer Kerr with a Letter of Appreciation for the measures she performed on March 16, 2022. She was recognized to receive the award during the City Council meeting on Monday, May 2, 2022.
“Officer Kerr’s selfless response certainly protected other motorists,” said Police Lieutenant Steve Nore. “During the incident, she remained focused on safeguarding lives and property. Officer Kerr’s actions certainly demonstrate the core values of the Johnston Police Department – Honor, Protection, and Service.”
On March 16, 2022, Officer Kerr was working night shift patrol in the City of Johnston and was traveling westbound on I-80 near the 132-mile marker when she observed a vehicle traveling toward her going the wrong way at a high rate of speed. Without hesitation, Officer Kerr initiated her emergency lights and siren, safely turned around, and caught up to the vehicle to attempt to stop the wrong-way driver. She selflessly placed herself in a very dangerous position to protect other motorists, knowing the dangers the driver’s actions presented to the public. After following the vehicle for over a mile, the vehicle eventually yielded. The driver was a confused elderly driver who wasn’t fully aware of their actions. Officer Kerr’s bravery, composure, and quick response prevented a likely tragedy and her actions reflect great credit upon herself, the Johnston Police Department, and the City of Johnston.
