AUDIT RELEASED ON CITY OF JOHNSTON'S FINANCES

Bohnsack & Frommelt LLP released an audit report on the City of Johnston, Iowa. The City’s revenues totaled $51,585,635 for the year ended June 30, 2021, a 1.8 percent decrease from the prior year.           
 
“We are pleased with the overall audit for the City of Johnston,” said Teresa Rotschafer, Assistant City Administrator/Finance Director.  “Each year, we ensure the tax dollars are spent wisely and there is appropriate documentation for every purchase. As the trend has shown, as our City continues to grow, so do the revenues from our enterprise funds, which includes water, sewer and stormwater.”   

Revenues included:

  • $16,323,284 in property tax, 
  • $14,292,614 from charges for service, 
  • $5,426,177 from operating grants and contributions, 
  • $3,398,592 from capital grants and contributions, 
  • $2,796,235 from Local Option Sales and Services tax, 
  • $7,890,410 from tax increment financing, and
  • $1,458,323 from other taxes.     

Expenses for the City’s governmental activities totaled $29,540,638, a ten percent increase from the prior year. Expenses included:

  • $9,483,589 for public safety, 
  • $9,400,098 for public works,
  • $4,204,892 for culture and recreation, 
  • $4,742,561 for community development, and
  • $1,709,498 from other expenses. 

Expenses for business-type activities totaled $10,504,042, a twelve percent increase. Expenses included:

  • $6,736,201 for water,
  • $3,223,409 for sewer, and 
  • $544,432 for stormwater.
