The Johnston-Grimes Professional Firefighters Local 4835 has been designing and selling t-shirts for eight years to raise funds for breast cancer awareness. Through a proclamation, members of the department are approved to wear the breast cancer shirts while on duty through October. Two local recipients battling the disease received $1,500 each from the funds raised this year.
“Being able to give back to two recipients this year is certainly something our entire Local 4835 is proud of, said Joel Hoium, Firefighter/Paramedic and Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraising Committee Chair. “This is a record year for sales and donations and we couldn’t do it without the support of our Johnston and Grimes communities. We hope this cause brings awareness to breast cancer and early detection to save lives.”
This is one of the biggest fundraisers for Local 4835. They enjoy seeing the community come together to support a resident in either Grimes or Johnston who is battling breast cancer or is a breast cancer survivor.
The recipients can use the funds however they wish. This could include medical bills, ongoing treatment, or a family vacation. “We understand this last year has been difficult for many, so we appreciate the generosity to help these families. The smiles when we recognized each recipient with a check were a sense of hope and kindness. Thank you to the community for being a part of this,” Hoium said.
The Local 4835 would also like to thank G2 Garage for their continued support of the outreach programs.
