Due to the recent hail storm that went through Johnston on Friday, there will be many companies evaluating damage to roofs and soliciting your business.
Door-to-door salespeople need to obtain a solicitor's permit at City Hall. Ask to see a solicitors permit from any vendor coming to your door.
In Johnston, no building permit is required to replace existing roof materials such as shingling and felt, except the rare case where you are repairing structural damage to the roof or expanding the roof. Replacement of shingles is considered a maintenance function. Also, replacement of siding due to hail damage is considered maintenance, and the City requires no building permit of Johnston.
In accordance with the City’s sign ordinance, signs advertising for any repairs like this must be located on the property of the work being done and not be placed in the Right of Way (the area in between the sidewalk and the street). If found in the Right of Way, the signs will be confiscated.
