Here are the top 7 most-asked questions of our Utility Department:

1. How may we pay our Utility bill?
There is a drop box located outside City Hall, located at 6221 Merle Hay Road.

You may pay by auto withdrawal from your checking or savings account. The ACH form (PDF) is on the City of Johnston's website.

You may mail your payment to: Johnston Water Department, PO Box 410, Johnston, IA 50131.

You may e-mail your payment information, or fax to (515) 278-2033.

The Hy-Vee customer service desk takes payments.

Stop by the Water Department counter at City Hall and pay in person by cash or check.

2. Does the City spray for mosquitoes? If so, when and for how long?
The city sprays for mosquitoes on Thursday nights in the middle of the night, from the beginning of mosquito season through the end.

4. How do we get our garbage and recycling bin fixed if broken lid or cracked?
If your garbage can is broken or cracked, please call Metro Waste Authority at (515) 244-0021 to let them know what is wrong. They will come out within 3 to 5 business days to fix or swap out your bin. Please place your bin so they can see it from the street.

5. Why is my utility bill high this month?
A high utility bill could mean you have a water leak. Leaks can account for 10,000 gallons of water wasted in the home every year. Ten percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day. Please read this pamphlet which could help you find a leak in your home (PDF). You may also call in to the Water Department, at (515) 278-2344, to have them look up your daily usage. The report can be e-mailed to you for reference on which days were high.

6. My garbage was missed. Whom should I call?
Call Metro Waste Authority at (515) 244-0021 to let them know you were missed on your garbage pick-up day.
