Certified Arborists

Becoming an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist strengthens the credibility and high technical standards in the tree care industry. Here in Johnston, four Parks staff members are Certified Arborists. As a resident, you can feel confident that the city staff has the knowledge and expertise to address tree care issues within the community.

The Parks arborists maintain city trees and landscapes. This includes trimming to ordinance over roads and sidewalks, hazard pruning, removal of diseased and dying trees, and general maintenance. They also replant new trees with the goal of a diverse urban forest.

This past year after the derecho came through, our Parks Department applied for and received a grant through the Iowa DNR to purchase and plant more trees as many were removed during the storm. Caring and planting trees throughout our community help to absorb carbon dioxide. Trees also help prevent erosion, absorb stormwater runoff, and provide much-needed shade to keep our outdoor spaces cooler to enjoy.
