Water Service

Providing high-quality water to every home is a priority in which the City takes great pride. Unfortunately, Xenia Rural Water District has filed a lawsuit against the City claiming approximately 850 individual properties within Johnston city limits are part of Xenia’s service area and that Xenia should be their water provider. This could affect up to 2,200 current residents.

The City is currently waiting on a ruling from the Iowa Supreme Court on this matter. If the court’s ruling is unfavorable to the City, it could result in services in the affected area being shifted to the Xenia district, possibly impacting water rates and services. However, it is unlikely anything would change until 2022 at the earliest.

Updates will be posted when they become available. Until then, we will continue to work hard to make sure all Johnston residents have what they need to Thrive. Every Day.

If you have any questions about this matter, please contact Janet Wilwerding, City of Johnston Communications Manager, at 515-727-7781 or jwilwerding@cityofjohnston.com.
