Mayor Paula Dierenfeld
Paula Dierenfeld has been the Mayor of Johnston since 2008.  Before becoming Mayor, she served eight years on the Johnston City Council.  Paula serves on a wide variety of community boards and councils, including the Johnston Chamber of Commerce, Johnston Economic Development Corporation, Iowa Gold Star Military Museum Board, Metro Advisory Council, Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau, Des Moines Area Regional Transit Commission and the Bravo of Greater Des Moines Board of Directors.

Paula is an attorney and partner at the Nyemaster Goode law firm in downtown Des Moines.  Practice areas include utility law, administrative law and legislative representation.  Past employment includes Iowa Utilities Board Commissioner, legal counsel to Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, research staff director in the Iowa General Assembly, and staff to U.S. Senator Charles Grassley.

Paula received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa, and her Juris Doctorate from Drake University Law School.  She lives in Johnston with her husband, Dave Roederer.  She has three children and 13 grandchildren.

Gerd Clabaugh was elected to the Johnston City Council in November 2005 and is currently serving his third term.  He serves the Council as its’ Mayor Pro Tem. He is the past-Chairman of the Board of Directors for Metro Waste Authority, central Iowa’s regional solid waste agency, providing services to 400,000 central Iowans. He currently serves as an ex-officio member of the Johnston Parks Board, and is on the city’s Economic Development Committee.

Gerd was appointed by Governor Branstad in May 2014 as the Director of the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). He has served in several capacities within IDPH, including Deputy Director, Director of Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention, Director of Acute Disease Epidemiology and Emergency Response; during the early 1990s, he served the Department as Director of the Center for Health Policy.

Gerd has experience in both state government operations and non-profit organizations. He is the former director of operations at the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative (IHC) where he worked with Iowa hospitals in promoting infection reduction strategies. As a private consultant, he supported public health agencies in assessing community health needs, program development, planning for public health improvement, and grant writing. He has previously served as chief employee benefits manager for the State of Iowa and on the staff of Governor Terry Branstad.

In the community, Gerd has served as a volunteer for the Johnston Soccer Club and coached for the Johnston Little League.  He is a member and formerly served on the Executive Board of First Baptist Church of Johnston. He is active in his neighborhood association.

Gerd has pursued doctoral studies at the University of Iowa, holds a Master's degree in Public Administration from Iowa State University and a Bachelor’s degree from Drake University. He is married to Jenelle Clabaugh and they have four children.

David Lindeman has served on the Johnston City Council since 2010.  Dave has been an active member of the Johnston community, having coached for Johnston Little League and been a Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 29. He's a past Board Member of the Johnston Little League and past coach of Johnston Youth Football.

Dave is a retired non-commissioned officer and is involved with veteran issues and holds a private pilot's license.  As a Johnston City Councilman, he is a liaison to the Johnston Public Library and Board of Adjustment.  He also sits on the Public Works and HR/Finance Council Committees.  He is the current Chair of the Central Iowa Drinking Water Commission.

Dave received his Bachelor of Arts in Independent Studies and Masters of Administrative Science degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University.  He received grad certificates in Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Public and Non-Profit Leadership and Global Security and Terrorism.  Dave is pursuing his PhD in Public Policy and Administration and Public Leadership Management from Walden University.

Dave lives on Johnston's east side with his wife Leslie.  He has children ranging in age from 11 to 23, and has three grandchildren.  He has advanced through Masonic degrees, and owns two dogs, one cat and a gecko.

Matt Brown has been a member of the Johnston City Council since 2012.  As president of Formation Group, Inc., Matt consults property owners regarding facility-related matters including project justification, planning, budgeting, incentive negotiation, site feasibility, building programming, building design, construction project management, move coordination and physical building operations.

Matt has over 23 years of comprehensive built environment experience with projects of all sizes, which includes project experience spanning five states, including California, Louisiana, Maryland, Wisconsin and Iowa. Most notable is his leadership in the development and operation of the Wellmark Headquarters, which earned a USGBC LEED platinum rating and achieved Energy Star certification in 2014. Matt was part of the team that led to the successful completion of Johnston's Public Safety Building in 2014.

Matt is an Executive Board member of the Neighborhood Development Corporation and sits on the city of Johnston's Public Safety and Stormwater Utility committees. He is a liaison to the Johnston Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Johnston Community Education, Comprehensive Plan Advisory Board, Johnston School Board and Johnston Economic Development Corporation.

An Iowa native, Matt received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Iowa State University and is a registered architect in the State of Iowa.

Matt is originally from the northwest Iowa town of Spencer.  He lives with his wife Nancy, their sons Aaron and Colin, and their English Bulldog Lucy Jo on Johnston's northwest side.

Tom Cope was first elected to the Johnston City Council in 2011.  On the Council, he serves on the Public Works and Economic Development Committees.  He also serves as a representative for Johnston on the Metro Advisory Council.

A Johnston resident since 2004, Tom lives in Green Meadows West with his wife Lynn, son Davis and daughter Harper.  Tom has been active in the community, serving as a youth sports coach in four sports.  He has served on the Board of Trustees for his church.  He is a partner in a small business that is based in Johnston.

John Temple has been a member of the Johnston City Council for 11 years.  His most recent term began in 2012. Prior to his time on the City Council, John was on Johnston's Planning and Zoning Commission for six years.

John is an attorney for Sheppard, Mullin, Richter and Hampton, LLP. His practice areas include employee benefits, ERISA, pension and 401(k) plans, and fiduciary advice.  He received his Bachelor of General Studies degree from the University of Iowa and his Juris Doctorate from the University of California - Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law.

John is a former member of the ChildServe Board of Directors, and sits on the city council's Public Safety, HR/Finance and Stormwater Utility Committees.  He is the council liaison to Johnston's Planning and Zoning Commission and Senior Citizens Advisory Board.  He is also a member and elder at St. Paul Presbyterian Church.

He lives with his wife Annie and son John on Johnston's west side. John is the only council member to have been born in Johnston.
