The derecho that occurred on Monday, August 10, created devastation, including power outages, and damage to trees and homes. We have received common questions from businesses and residents, so below are questions and answers based upon those we have heard the most.

MidAmerican Energy Company crews have been working to restore service to customers, whether it’s electric, gas and/or tree services after the derecho occurred on Monday, August 10. As of August 14, 2020, at 1:31 p.m., power has been restored to all but 104 customers in Johnston.

Q: When can I expect my power to be restored?
A: MidAmerican Energy Company expects power to be restored to most customers by Friday or Saturday. Unfortunately, the City of Johnston does not provide power service. Updates by City and County can be found on MidAmerican’s website.

Q: How can I report my outage to ensure it was received?
A: Power outages can be reported to MidAmerican by visiting

Q: The outage map does not show my neighborhood?
A: As more outages are reported to MidAmerican Energy, the map groups them together, so you may not be able to zoom in on your specific location on the map. Click "Updates" at the top of the page for more information.

Q: Will the days be extended for tree debris drop-off?
A: No, the debris drop-off site at Terra Park will not be extended into the week of August 17.

Q: I have other items damaged by the storm besides trees. What do I do with that?
A: We encourage you to haul the items to the landfill. If the items include large fence pieces or swing sets, those can often be broken down into small enough sections. Taking the items directly to the landfill will save on costs. If you are unable to haul to the landfill, the curbside pickup may be available. City crews will not be picking up other items besides trees.

Q: I have a tree branch that is down from a tree in the right-of-way. Am I responsible for taking it down?
A: No, the City will take care of the tree, if it is in the right-of-way. This is the area between the curb and the sidewalk.

Q: Where can I find more information about the curbside pickup of trees and branches?
A: Curbside pickup will begin on Monday, August 17, and crews will continue working throughout the city. Please be patient as it could take up to a month to get the entire community’s tree debris picked up. Details and guidelines can be found by visiting

Q: What are the open burning regulations in Johnston?
A: More information is available by visiting City Code 105.05. However, burning yard debris should be considered as a last option.

Q: I have some electrical questions after the storm. Who do I contact?
A: Homeowners are responsible for contacting a licensed electrician to restore certain components of their meter box and connections so the utility provider can restore components that are owned by the utility provider. Renters who have issues with electricity should contact their landlord first and then Iowa Legal Aid for additional assistance with concerns.
