[ARCHIVED] GARBAGE CARTS ARE BEING SWAPPED OUT

Metro Waste Authority Cart_250x210

A lot of new garbage carts are already rolling through Johnston, but deliveries will continue next week on Monday and Tuesday. If you haven’t gotten a cart yet, it will be coming June 22/23 or 29/30, on your regular collection day. If your neighborhood has new carts, but for some reason, you don’t, Metro Waste Authority can help -- call 515.244.0021.

Residents can expect their garbage carts to swap with a Metro Waste Authority cart in mid to late June – on the regular garbage collection day. The carts will be swapped out with the exact size residents currently have. As the garbage trucks pick up the garbage each week, an organization hired to swap the carts will follow the trucks and swap the current cart with a new one. Swapping the carts will take longer than the trash collection, so it is estimated it may take up to three weeks to swap out the entire community. We are asking residents to leave the carts on the curb longer after they have been emptied to allow time for the cart to be swapped. If they are not swapped the first week, they will be swapped in the second or third week. If a resident is not home on the date the cart is swapped, arrangements will be made to have a new cart delivered.

For residents with trash collection on Monday (west of NW 86th Street), the swap will be June 22, or 29. For customers with trash collection on Tuesday (east of NW 86th Street), the swap will be June 23 or 30. The new carts will be brown, and customers with a 96-gallon cart will receive a 96-gallon cart. Customers with a 64 or 48 -gallon cart will receive a 48-gallon cart.

Residents are encouraged to use their large items stickers before July 1, 2020. However, the City is willing to swap out large-item Waste Management stickers for Metro Waste Authority stickers at City Hall. Stickers are sold from the customer service departments of many local grocery stores, hardware stores and City Hall. They are also available online from Metro Waste Authority.

Beginning in July, if residents have questions regarding their garbage, recycling, or yard waste, connect with Metro Waste Authority by visiting www.WhereItShouldGo.com/Johnston or calling 515.244.0021.

There are no changes to the “Curb It” recycling program or the “Compost It” yard waste program. Despite the change in haulers, residents will likely see no significant change in service.
