PRACTICE GOOD TRAIL ETIQUETTE

trail users

The use of trails in Johnston is an excellent way for families to get out and enjoy the outdoors. It provides good physical and mental health, which we all need during this COVID-19 pandemic. As a trail user, we want everyone to be mindful and use proper trail etiquette.

  • First and foremost, be patient with each other and slow down!  There are more people eager to get out and enjoy the fresh air.  We encourage everyone to be understanding and flexible while enjoying our beautiful trails.
  • As always, maintain ten people or less to a group and stay at least 6 feet apart from one another.
  • While on the trails, be aware of your surroundings.  Slower bikers and walkers should be on the right and allow for passing on the left.
  • If you are passing someone, it is always good to announce “on your left” loudly, so they hear you. This will warn the individual you are passing.
  • Make sure you can hear what is going on around you.  It is strongly recommended that you “unplug” from your phones (earbuds, etc.) and listen to nature…as well as fellow trail users.
  • When meeting another trail user (from the opposite direction), please move to the far right to allow for separation as you pass.  If you are in a group, please form a single-file line to maintain the six-foot social distancing separation.
  • Bikes need to slow down near potential blind spots or intersections.
  • If you are walking a pet, make sure you have complete control of them and please pick up after them.  Doggie bags are located in convenient locations along all of the trails.
