The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department received a $5,000 prize donation from the Underwriters Laboratories. This award was for a video contest that Adam Koch entered and chose to designate the Fire Department as the recipient of the award.
The contest was based on the fire safety message "Close Before You Doze." It was aimed at educating people to close their bedroom doors before they go to sleep to provide extra protection in case of a fire breaking out while they are sleeping. The requirements were that the prize money had to go to a fire department for Fire Education and Adam Koch and Cooper Pierce designated the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department.
Their video "Tame the Flame" made it into the top 8 in the national contest and finished with an honorable mention for a prize worth $5,000. The department will use the money to purchase fire safety publications to hand out in schools and at open houses. It will also be used to purchase smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, along with batteries, to keep in the fire rigs and ambulances to install for residents that do not have working detectors.
