Nationally, the month of October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a cause that firefighters have been supporting across the nation.
Did you know? Female firefighters are more likely to develop breast cancer than the general population, and male firefighters are 7.5 times more likely than the general population to die of breast cancer.
In 2016, firefighters were the number one fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink program, raising a total of $108,948. To raise awareness firefighters are authorized to wear pink t-shirts as part of their uniform the month of October. The shirts were purchased by the firefighters with 100% of the proceeds going to support a local cancer patient.
The t-shirts will serve as a reminder to all the people of Johnston to live a healthy lifestyle and get regular check-ups.
