The bricks will be placed around this artwork, which symbolizes our connection with the earth, "Terra." No one could describe it better in one sentence than Kahil Gibran in "Trees are poems the earth writes upon the sky."
We are all connected with trees, one way or another. We depend on their ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen. We depend on their shade, their shelter, their beauty, their appearance, their building materials - the benefits are endless.
Apart from these values, there are so many small and meaningful moments happening around trees including a walk or picnic in the park, relaxing in a hammock under a tree, planting a tree when moving into a new home or in memory of a loved one. The budding of the leaves is a sign of spring, the raking of the leaves in fall, the sports game in the park, the music concert in the shade of the tree.
A grouping of leaves will adorn the metal tree. Words related to the community of Johnston will appear in each of the leaves. A selection of the words will be cut out of the leaves and will create a shadow on the concrete below, depending on the time of day and year.
Depending on the preference of the Johnston Public Art Commission, the tree stem could be connected, similar to option 1 or might be separated from one another, similar to option 2, to create a "Space" so people can walk in between the stems, interact, mingle, take pictures, gather or relax in the shade of the leaves.
