Over the next year, the City of Johnston will be updating its Johnston 2030 Comprehensive Plan, which was adopted in 2010. The Johnston Comprehensive Plan which addresses land use, parks, housing, transportation, and infrastructure is a visionary policy document that directs how the city will continue to grow and evolve over the next 10 to 20 years.

To assist the city in the updating process, the City Council has retained Hoisington Koegler Group, Inc. (HKGi), a community planning and landscape architectural firm based in Minneapolis, MN to lead the process.

Work on the plan update will be coordinated by Johnston’s Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council. Johnston residents and businesspersons will have a number of opportunities to be involved in the effort and to add their ideas to the plan. The community engagement effort is expected to start in June 2019.  Information on the plan will be continually updated on the City’s website.

Since the Johnston 2030 plan was adopted, the City has experienced tremendous growth including a population increase from approximately 17,278 to 22,000 residents, more than $217 million in new commercial/industrial construction, more than 2,200 residential units have been constructed, and approximately 1,500 acres have been annexed; thus, necessitating the need for a plan update.
