Doug Kreklau will retire on Friday, July 27, after a 20-year career with the City of Johnston Parks Department.
Doug began with the City in June of 1999. Twenty years ago, the City of Johnston had a population of 7,087, and departments were much smaller which meant duties often overlapped. Park maintenance was taken care of by Public Works, so Doug not only took care of the city park but assisted the streets department as needed.
During his tenure, Doug has served in many capacities and was a well-respected colleague among his co-workers. “Doug was always willing to do what was asked of him while keeping the city’s best interest in mind,” said John Schmitz Parks & Recreation Director. “You could count on Doug to be available even if it was at 3 a.m. to push snow on his cul-da-sac route or after a wind storm to help with tree clean up. He was an employee you could count on to be there when needed and do an excellent job with the task he was given. He showed drive and passion and was a pleasure to work side by side with.”
Doug enjoyed interacting with residents and many knew him as, “Mr. Johnston.” He was given this name because he had the ability to put a smile one someone’s face no matter what type of day they were having.
Doug’s knowledge is one that will be missed by many of his colleagues. He was the “go-to” for questions and information regarding trees, turf, Green Meadows trail light and his uncanny ability to catch moles. Those who worked with Doug appreciated his willingness to share his knowledge, but he too enjoyed helping others learn.
As Doug gets ready for retirement, he looks forward to spending more time with family, perfecting his golf and pool games, cheering on his son at Iowa State and working more in his own yard.
