Over the past several days the Police Department has experienced an increase in the number of reported complaints regarding petty thefts from motor vehicles. Although the Johnston Police Department is working diligently to try and curtail this activity and apprehend the responsible offenders, we need the community’s help to ensure our efforts are successful. The Police Department wants residents to be alert for any suspicious persons or behavior and for you to contact the Johnston Police Department if you observe anything out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. The Police Department also recommends residents follow these simple guidelines to minimize your risk of becoming a victim of this type of crime.
- Keep your overhead garage doors closed anytime you are going to be out of immediate sight of your garage.
- Lock your vehicle and remove all valuable property from it whenever your vehicle is going to be left unattended for any period of time.
- Keep your electronics, purse, or wallet with you at all times when you are out and avoid leaving it in the car.
- Only take necessary items of value with you when you go out. Leave any unnecessary electronics, cash, credit cards and important document secured at home instead of routinely carrying them around needlessly in your vehicle, wallet or purse.
IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING, and contact the Johnston Police Department at 515-278-2345 so an officer can respond and assess the situation and hopefully prevent or deter a potential crime from occurring.
