With Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 11, it is time to set your clocks ahead one hour and replace the batteries in your detectors.
The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department has a few tips to ensure your safety during Daylight Saving Time.
- After you replace your batteries, hit the test button to make sure it is working. If it is not, you may need a new smoke detector.
- Be sure to also check the manufacture date on both your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Depending upon the manufacture, detectors can last anywhere from five to ten years.
If you are renting a house or apartment, it is the landlords obligation to make sure the smoke detectors are working. However, as a renter you have an obligation to ensure they are working too. If you are a renter and you move into an unoccupied space, it is now your responsibility to maintain the smoke detector.
It is also a good idea to prepare and practice an escape plan! Plan where to meet outside. And, once you’re out, Stay out! Remember, almost every day a smoke alarm saves somebody’s life.
