The City of Johnston is a proponent of higher education and supports employees in reaching their higher educational goals by offering a Tuition Reimbursement program. The program is up to $1,200 per calendar year with a lifetime maximum benefit of $4,800 for full-time employees. While this may not cover a large portion of costs for employees, it certainly helps get them started into a program that may end up advancing their careers.
In December 2017, Scott Chiri, a member of the Public Works Department streets division received his Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration and took advantage of the tuition reimbursement. “It is important employees seek higher education if their place of employment supports it,” said Scott Chiri. “As an employee and being able to take advantage of this benefit has made me realize the value I add to the city. They want to see people grow and promote from within whenever possible.” One key piece of advice Chiri has for those thinking about going back for a higher degree, “Be focused and committed because it is a big time commitment, but well worth it in the end.”
Chiri is not the only one to pursue a degree in higher education. Tristan Johnson, a member of the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration. Tristan was encouraged to seek a higher degree by Deputy Chief Michael Gentosi. Tristan states, “Earning my Bachelor’s degree will help prepare me for future promotional opportunities within the department and makes me a better leader in my current role.”
As an employee, Tristan too values the tuition reimbursement program because he knows the City of Johnston is investing in his career. “Having the City of Johnston cover a portion of my education costs reassures me that I am a valued employee and an important part of our department,” said Johnson.
This program provides advancement in education and secures an increase in responsibility and growth within the employee’s professional career.
