During a snow/ice event, removal is prioritized in order to make the most efficient use of available resources. Depending on the nature of the snowstorm, deviations could occur. Prioritization is established as arterials, cul-de-sacs and parking lots and sidewalks.
The Johnston Parks Department takes an active role in helping with snow removal operations. They always begin in public parking lots to ensure everyone’s safety. These public parking lots include Crown Point, City Hall, Library/Simpson Barn and Public Safety.
The second priority, within 24-hours are sidewalks and trails that lead to schools. The goal is to get these cleared prior to school being in session. Parks staff will come in early to ensure important pedestrian areas are clear. This includes new snow as well as snow that drifts in.
The third priority within 24-hours are commuter trails, which are used by individuals who commute to and from their place of employment. These include NW 62nd Avenue, NW 70th Avenue, and interurban areas.
The final priority are the recreational trails, which are cleared within 48-hours. This includes the natural resource area, Foxboro and interior park trails. These trails are not as important for transportation, but are used for recreational uses.
Johnston Parks & Recreation works to properly clear all trails in Johnston to ensure residents and visitors are able to utilize them during any time.
