$350,000 (engineering and construction)
Following the public meeting held on August 23, 2017, the City received a petition from the owners of the adjacent single family residential lots most closely affected by the project objecting to the tree removal necessary to stabilize the erosion occurring in this area and to create stable slopes on the banks. Staff and the project engineer have reviewed this area and the proposed plans to try to identify alternatives that would reduce the necessary tree removal in this area. Unfortunately, there a no methods available to stabilize the banks of the channel without significant tree removal in the area. As such, given the neighborhood concern for the tree removal, staff will be recommending to the City Council the indefinite postponement of this project. This item will be discussed with the City Council at their Worksession at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017. The meeting is held at Johnston City Hall, 6221 Merle Hay Road. The meeting agenda and related information will be made available on the City website, cityofjohnston.com by mid-day on Friday.
City Council Project Discussion
The City has a significant amount of other stormwater projects that need to be completed that that the funding intended for this project will be redirected too, should the Council agree to postpone the project. So please be aware that if additional erosion and bank sluffing occurs which changes the neighborhood sentiment to the project, it will likely take several years for the project to be worked back into the list of priority projects.
Public Meeting to Learn More About the Project
On August 23, 2017 at 6:00 p.m., a brief presentation (PDF) was presented by HR Green to the neighborhood group.
