Lures and Lunch - Thursdays in September 


Join Johnston Parks & Recreation for "Lures and Lunch" at Terra Park. Participants can bring their lunch to the fishing pier and the City of Johnston Parks & Recreation Department will have bait and fishing poles for you to "cast" away your workday for an hour of carefree catch and release fishing. This will take place on Thursdays in September from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 

Yoga by the Lake - Saturdays in September 


Join Power Life Yoga instructors on Saturday mornings in September at Terra Park as they conduct a free one hour yoga session near the amphitheater. Classes will be held on September 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Please bring a yoga mat and water and be ready to relax from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Visit www.cityofjohnston.com/YogabytheLake for the list of instructors. 

Nature Walking for Wellness - Wednesdays in September


Come explore the beauty of nature at Terra Park and Beaver Creek Natural Resource Area, and get to know your neighbors at the same time. Participants will meet at Terra Park Shelter, 6400 Pioneer Parkway at 11:00 a.m. and head out on a walk on the trails enjoying the plants, trees, birds and insects that call Johnston home. Walk as little or as much as you would like. There will be a prize for best nature photo taken during the walk, so bring those smart phones. Please wear appropriate walking shoes, bug spray and bring a re-fillable water bottle. Binoculars and a smartphone will enhance the experience as well. 

Birding - Friday, September 14


The Johnston Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a birding workshop for enthusiasts, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The workshop will be led by Dennis Thompson from the Des Moines Audubon. Appropriate clothing and footwear will be required as this will be a walking activity. A set of binoculars and a sense of adventure will be helpful. Those interested in attending can meet at the Terra Park shelter, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway.

Senior 50+ Fun Night - Wednesday, September 19


Join in on the fun during the annual 50+ Fun Night tailgate on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at Terra Park shelter, beginning at 6 p.m. Participants will enjoy BBQ from Cactus Bob’s. Sign up is available at Crown Point or by calling Sue at 515-494-2228 by Sept. 14. The $6 fee will be collected the evening of the event. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite team colors and enjoy an evening of fun and games! The event is sponsored by the Johnston Senior Advisory Board.

Iowa Dog Jog - Saturday, September 22


At the Iowa Dog Jog, you'll strengthen your bond and probably also make some new friends along the way! Pick your choice of 2K or 4K, and then enjoy a rockin' dog festival full of fun activities for you and your dog, such as paw-print painting, off-leash dog parks with separate areas for large and small dogs, visit with great vendors and rescue groups, dog contests (including a whip cream eating contest...for your dog, not you) and so much more. Senior Field Trip - Thursday, October 11


Join the senior group on Thursday, October 11 for a day trip to Iowa Falls and cruise the scenic Iowa River while enjoying a relaxing lunch on the Empress Boat. Following the cruise, the group will tour the Historical Dow House and Metropolitan Oprah House, then head downtown Iowa Falls for a little shopping. The events are sponsored by the Johnston Senior Advisory Board.

Firefighters' Ball - Friday, October 19
The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department invites you to the Firefighters’ Ball on Friday, Oct. 19. Tickets are $50/person, $90/Couple or $360/Table (8 persons). The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar (complimentary beer and wine), dinner, silent auction, raffles, dancing and a complimentary photographer. Business attire is recommended.

The event will be held at Hilton Garden Inn, located at 8600 North Park Drive in Urbandale. Purchase your tickets today to support the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department and join in on the fun on Oct. 19 as items are auctioned off!

Trick-or-Treat with First Responders - Wednesday, October 24


Join community members and trick-or-treat with first responders on Wednesday, October 24 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Fire station 38, 10225 NW 62nd Ave. The Police and Fire Departments will be handing out treats from their squad cars and fire trucks and will also talk about "safety" when going out on Beggars' Night.

We encourage the children to wear their Halloween costume because the Police and Fire Chiefs will be voting on the best dressed child! Photos will be taken at the event and posted on our Facebook with the winners after the Chiefs cast their vote.

Drug Take-Back Day - Saturday, October 27


The Johnston Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration want to help make homes safe by destroying all expired or unused prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications during a community Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, October 27.

Johnston police officers will be at the Public Safety Building, located at 6373 Merle Hay Road in Johnston on Saturday, October 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to take possession of any expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. The purpose of the drop off is to help residents remove potentially dangerous substances from their medicine cabinets by establishing a safe collection site. The service is free and anonymous, no questions will be asked.

Any solid dosage form of pharmaceutical products such as tablets, capsules and patches will be accepted. Liquids, needles, sharps, inhalers, syringes, IV solutions and other bio-hazard materials will not be accepted.
