As a resident, it is important to remember it is illegal to burn leaves, grass clippings, pine needles, garden waste and other organic debris within Johnston city limits. Please continue to use the Compost It! yard waste program. Compost It! provides curbside collection of yard waste. City code allows the burning of brush, sticks, branches, trees and shrubs on single-family and two-family residential properties when placed 25 feet away from a neighboring home. If burning is conducted in a fire ring or portable outdoor fireplace with a spark arrestor, the distance away from buildings is 15 feet.
Burning is not allowed in the public right-of-way or any public easement area. Property owners or tenants must be present at all times when open burning is taking place. Please remember to be respectful of neighbors who may enjoy the fall weather and do not appreciate smoke blowing into their homes.
